"The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are good, your whole body will be full of light." (Matthew 6:22)
Dr. McKinney is a glaucoma specialist and comprehensive ophthalmologist, with expertise in cataract surgery. "One hundred years ago, glaucoma was a uniformly blinding disease. With recent advances in diagnostic technology, medical therapy and surgical technique, blindness due to glaucoma is now uncommon in the USA. Our current challenge in caring for persons with glaucoma is to preserve a lifetime of good vision without diminishing quality of life. Providing personalized care for the whole person, not just the eye, is the most rewarding part of my work as a glaucoma specialist."
Dr. McKinney received his B.S., Phi Beta Kappa, in Biology from Baylor University and also participated in Honors Study at St. Peter's College at Oxford University. He graduated from Medical School at Baylor College of Medicine and continued his studies at Johns Hopkins University where he received a Master of Public Health, Epidemiology. Dr. McKinney spent a year as a missionary at ECWA Eye Hospital, Kano, Nigeria, West Africa. Upon his return to the United States, he completed his residency in Ophthalmology and Fellowship in Glaucoma at the University of Iowa. He practiced as a glaucoma specialist for three years at King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia before joining EyeHealth Northwest in 1998.
Dr. McKinney has served for 7 years on the Executive Committee of the Oregon Academy of Ophthalmology and is currently Vice President of that organization. Dr. McKinney enjoys teaching and lecturing. He has presented as faculty at several international meetings, including ones in Nepal, Israel, Japan and China, and served as volunteer faculty with ORBIS, the flying eye hospital. Like many of his partners at EyeHealth Northwest, Dr. McKinney shares a strong commitment to serving the medical needs of those living in less privileged countries. His short-term medical trips have focused on training local physicians through lectures and one-on-one surgical demonstration.
Dr. McKinney and his wife, Greta, met studying Public Health at Johns Hopkins. She is a RN with work experience ranging from the NIH treatment ICU in Bethesda Maryland to village health nursing in rural Benin Republic, West Africa. Their three children, Christian, James and Noelle, attended a Mandarin language immersion program throughout elementary school and all share a love for music, reading, swimming and camping. The family is active in their church and in the ministry of Eagle Fern Camp (a local Christian summer camp).
