"Providing patient satisfaction and care are my primary concerns. My goal is to provide the most recent, sophisticated, and safe technological innovations to a large number of people, giving them remarkable opportunities to restore or improve their vision."
Dr. Waldman is a comprehensive ophthalmologist. Given his interest in technological innovations, his practice has a focus on refractive surgery, LASIK, lens implants and astigmatism. "In my practice, I emphasize technology to improve surgical outcomes. I only use well-tested technology because safety and caution are an important part of achieving the best outcomes that will last a long time."
Correcting astigmatism is a passion for Dr. Waldman. He attends annual continuing education on the topic and hones his skills in hands-on training. He has had a special course in astigmatism correction, and thus he has adopted specific surgical techniques for this correction of the condition.
Dr. Waldman knows how to quickly put his patients’ worries to rest. "People get very scared when it comes to their vision. I want them to feel like they can ask me anything." He ensures that his patients are fully informed and counseled on what the best option is for their particular condition. "I like to be the patient’s advocate."
Like many of the EHNW doctors, Dr. Waldman has devoted a great deal of his time in training the next generation of ophthalmologists and keeping the profession strong. Since 1976, he has served periodically as a clinical professor at OHSU. He also helped run the Oregon Academy of Ophthalmology for fifteen years in different roles as President and Board member.
Dr. Waldman’s career has focused on community medicine in which he can provide the greatest relief to the most people possible. "Being a positive force of change was deeply ingrained in me from going to UC Berkeley and growing up during the Civil Rights Era." During medical school, he went to Israel to study the public health system. And his first job out of medical school was as the sole doctor for a community of 3000 on the Winnebago Indian Reservation. "It was a fantastic and formative experience. I learned radical self-reliance. I became more of a humanitarian." Dr. Waldman continues this spirit of service in his work at EHNW today.
Dr. Waldman has many personal pursuits. "I always have three projects going–art, reading or gardening—it’s just the way I am." He is married to Ann, his wife of 39 years. As a couple, they make a complementary duo in their home projects. She is the creative designer, and he is the engineer. They have remodeled an old Portland home as a labor of love. She uses her artistic talent and vision while he is able to provide much of the sweat and labor to complete the project. They have two adult children, Michael and Jill. Now, their "babies" are Blue, Saga Martha, Rosie and Bella--their beloved Airedale dogs.
