Dr. Schiefer is a fellowship-trained ophthalmologist with a passion for advanced techniques in cataract and refractive surgery. He has a particular interest in presbyopia and astigmatism-correcting intraocular lenses, and has experience using all types of available intraocular lenses during cataract surgery. He also treats a variety of medical eye disease, as well as dry eye.
Dr. Schiefer discovered his love for ophthalmology while in medical school at the University of Maryland. His dedication to ophthalmology grew further after completing a fellowship in Ophthalmic Pathology and Imaging at the University of Wisconsin. Dr. Schiefer then moved to Brooklyn, New York to complete his ophthalmology residency at SUNY Downstate and was elected as Chief Resident in his final year. He was also honored with the “Excellence in Teaching” award because of his passion for teaching junior residents and medical students. He then completed a fellowship in cataract, refractive, and corneal surgery at the Eye Institute of West Florida in Tampa, Florida. During that time, he learned from world-renowned leaders in cataract surgery. While a fellow, he presented research on presbyopia-correcting intraocular lenses that was awarded “Best Paper of Session” at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS).
When not in the operating room or clinic, Dr. Schiefer enjoys racket sports, fishing, hiking, and camping with his wife and their adopted beagle. He lives in Portland, and is thrilled to be able to care for patients at EyeHealth Northwest.
